Synopsis

Monumental offers a rare insight into the world's great buildings through the eyes of master stonemason and conservator Simon Warrack. Drawing on decades of work at some of the world's most significant heritage sites, Warrack reflects on the craftsmanship, traditions and cultural values embedded in stone, from Canterbury Cathedral and the Trevi Fountain to Angkor Wat and Great Zimbabwe.

Blending travel, memoir and architectural history, the book explores what it really means to conserve our built heritage. Rather than simply restoring monuments, Warrack argues for an approach rooted in an understanding of the people, skills and beliefs that first brought these extraordinary places into being.
