Synopsis

Middle Quarter is architect John Tuomey’s mid-career memoir and a companion to his earlier book, First Quarter. Moving between the personal and the professional, Tuomey reflects on family, friendships and the evolution of his practice with Sheila O’Donnell, as well as the ideas, challenges and ambitions that have shaped a life in architecture.

Combining concise prose with sketches and photographs, the book offers an intimate look at the thinking behind O’Donnell + Tuomey’s work, from the Glucksman Gallery in Cork and Belfast’s Lyric Theatre to projects in London and Budapest. Along the way, Tuomey considers the role of the architect in contemporary society and the relationship between buildings, places and the lives lived around them.
