Synopsis
I first met the potter and author, Edmund de Waal, when I was editing Crafts magazine in 2008. We had a coffee and, as we were parting ways, I asked him what he was up to next. He looked a little sheepish and told me he was off the Lake District to finish a book about the history of his family’s collection of netsuke, or tiny Japanese carvings. They’d apparently had a bit of history.
When I returned to the office I told my team what Edmund was up to. ‘It sounds quite interesting,’ I said, ‘but I can’t imagine anyone buying it…’
The Hare with Amber Eyes won the Costa Biography Award in 2010 and has sold by the bucket full ever since. If you haven’t read it yet, now might be the time to treat yourself.
An intimate story set against an epic backdrop. It’s a beautiful piece of work.
